First off, DO NOT start retinol, tretinoin, tret. That shit will fuck you up if you don’t know what you’re doing as you’ve already said you don’t. Secondly, don’t worry about Korean or Japanese stuff yet. Yes, it’s better and often less expensive. Learn your skin first and start with the basics: cleanser, an exfoliator, a moisturizer, and SPF. Rock that for a month or two and see how you do. Then, when you’re ready, try adding vitamin c. After a month of that, maybe start wading into learning about Korean and Japanese products based on ONE concern and build from there. FIRST THINGS FIRST: figure out your skin type. This will help. https://eminenceorganics.com/us/blog/2019/05/01/easy-three-step-test-reveal-your-skin-type Based on that, get your staples. Your local Ulta should have most of this: - CLEANSER: get Cerave or La Roche Posay if you want a bit better. If you have oily skin try a foaming cleanser. If you’re more dry, go with something that isn’t foaming. Cerave does a great job of telling you what kind of skin is best for each product on the front of the package. - EXFOLIATOR: If you have dry skin, I’d try the Paula’s Choice AHA gel. Oily, their BHA would work. Someone else might have a better suggestion here. - MOISTURIZER: again, go with Cerave. Super easy place to start. Pay attention to the bottles to find based on skin type. - spf: Do not skip spf! Both Cerave and La Roche do easily accessible spf. ELTA MD is also great. WEAR A HAT WHEN OUTSIDE! Routine: AM: - cleanse: if you’re dry, splash water on your face before the rest of your routine and skip the cleanse. If you’re oily then go ahead and cleanse. - moisturize - SPF PM: - cleanse - exfoliate (every other day to start) - moisturize The point is to start with less so you see how how your skin reacts to the basics. What I’ve listed above is boring and you may not feel the biggest difference, but this is the foundation. From there, you can adjust based on your concerns. When you’re ready to branch out, the Asian Beauty Reddit is the besssst. Good luck!
